Whenever I hear this yelled at comrades and fellow activists I laugh like a child.
Is that it? Can you think of anything better?
As activists, we hold two sometimes three or four different roles in our everyday lives. We are mothers, lovers, fathers, sisters, brothers, uncles, aunties, carers, workers, volunteers, teachers, chefs, public servants.
Activism is a chosen role. More often then not we are also volunteers within our local communities. Activism doesn’t pay our bills, In fact, it costs much more than money. We spend time, energy, time away from loved ones and pets, to be a voice for the voiceless.
In today’s modern world, we are all time poor. Yet your local animal activist will find that litter bit extra to give back.
We hide our faces not because we are afraid of you, but to protect our careers. We have mortgages and rent to pay. Families to support.
Activism ain’t free.
So before calling us bludgers and dole thieves, remember. We have careers, pay taxes, vote and are active members of our community.
